The Iconic Butterfly Album

“I’d give my all to have, Just one more night with you, I’d risk my life to feel,Your body next to mine, ‘Cause I can’t go on, Living in the memory of our song,I’d give my all for your love tonight”, this is just a snippet of her beautiful lyrics that she used to describe her lover or the love of her life. There is hope in finding for finding love whenever I listen to the Butterfly Album by the Queen of R&B, Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey’s prominent song My All, won the hearts of many of her fans because the lyrics of the song were so genuine and listening to the song was like wanting to marry your life partner all over again. After listening to Carey’s hit for about five times, I can honestly say that this song was like listening to love letter she was writing to the love of her life or her suspected lover at the time, Luis Miguel. Mariah Carey always delivers a song with a message of love and there is hope in finding love. The Butterfly album sold over ten million copies worldwide, however, My All became top ten songs across Europe and the United States charts according to Vibe.com . This iconic singer delivers a masterpiece and at the same gives us hope that we too, may find love one day.

Though Mariah Carey had many hits off this album, she did have a miss. One of the songs that I believe that album could throw away is, Honey. All of the songs on this album are slow paced and ballads, and there goes Honey, a fast-paced song with lyrics that are little redundant. It was like Carey was trying to force this song down our throats  by placing this as her first song on the album. However, if you listen to this song closely, you might notice that some of the lyrics of the song sound like she is begging for reconciliation from an ex. Many of her fans, including myself believed that some of the lyrics were about her ex, husband Tommy Mottola. During the time the song was written,Mariah and Tommy were divorcing and in the bridge of the song, she sang “let’s smooth it out, come on”. This song does not follow the consistent theme of the album: vulnerability. Throughout the entire album, you can sense that the singer was trying to open up what it felt like to be in love and that is why a lot of her fans adore her.  Out of all Mariah Carey’s albums that she has created over the years, it is only with this album is where you can see and feel Carey’s authentic self . Many critics like TheMuse.com believe that Carey stepped out of her cocoon and found her voice. In her previous album, Daydream, Mariah Carey showed the fun and energetic side of herself by creating songs like Fantasy, that fans can dance too. Overall Mariah Carey’s Butterfly album is unbeatable.
